Holy Week 2011: Palm Sunday

Newly Installed Altar Server

36 Young Men were commissioned as new altar servers. Most Rev. Msgr. Socrates Villegas officiated the ceremony. All of them are students of St. John's Cathedral School.

Vocation Day

Vocation day is a yearly gathering of the altar servers to find their vocations in the priesthood or in the consecrated life.

St. John the Evangelist Metropolitan Cathedral

In a solemn celebration presided by the Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, the formal transfer of the Episcopal Seat and the establishment of the Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan was held on 27 December 2010, the Feast of St. John, the Apostle.

Visitors from Japan

Guest from Japan observed the misa de gallo on its first day. Bishop Berard Oshikawa of the diocese of Naha lead the delegation.

Holy Week 2011: Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday, we commemorate Jesus’ celebrated entry into Jerusalem just a few days before his arrest, trial, and crucifixion. The feast commemorates Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

Palms are blessed with an aspergilium before the mass. During this time the story of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem is read. After the blessing procession takes place. The palms are saved until the following year to be burned as the source of ashes in Ash Wednesday service.

This Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday to commemorate Jesus capture, sufferings and death. The liturgical color of the day is Red, the color of blood.
